AYC,全称安生海外青年教学使者项目,是由安生教育集团发起,自2013年起实施的品牌项目,每年选拔一批来自海外名校的优秀青年到中国,进行为期一年的英语教学。

 

20189月,第六届安生美国青年教学项目的第一批教学使者如期来到中国上海。他们分别来自美国、英国、加拿大、南非等国,Danielle是其中之一,她被分配到浙江衢州龙游县实验小学担任外教。短短三个月,Danielle就成了“孩子王”,受到学校一致好评,她说有本书给了她很大的教学启迪,一起来听听看——

 


My name is Danielle and I'm an English teacher at Longyou Experimental Primary School.

大家好,我叫丹尼尔,是龙游实验小学的一名英语教师。

Growing up,I was always encouraged by my parents tobe of service to others,even when it felt strange or ncomfortable.The fact that I was feeling strange about something was all the more reason to runtoward that thing,rather than away from it.Teaching English to Chinesestudents while speaking little to no Chinese is definitely uncomfortable attimes. 



My parents believed there was something to be learned through allthings.This belief is likely what landed me in China years later writing this at the present moment.

 

从小父母就教育我要为他人服务,对于陌生的事情要勇于尝试、努力去接近它。对我来说,来到一个陌生的环境,教中国学生学英文,很少能与母语相同的同伴交流,一切都是新的开始,就是一件很有难度、很有挑战的事情。我的父母鼓励我说“从每件事中都能学到些新东西”,这样的想法使我来到中国并在此刻记录下我的经历。

During my first year of college,Bryan Stevenson cameto campus for a speaking engagement,where he shared stories about working asan attorney on death row out of his newest novel,Just Mercy.I had not yet read the entire novel at that time,justrandom excerpts that seemingly all of my social justice coursework wasanalyzing.Hearing Bryan speak that day was powerful.



His novel subsequentlygave me language to interpret and engage with the world around me.Stevenson wrote the novel around the context of his work ondeath row,and I came to understand the novel through my own work around socialjustice issues.I took on his themes as my own and I see them as the idealizedway I would hope to engage with others in any context.Right now, as a foreignteacher here,I find that the thematic structure of his work applies deeply tomy pedagogy here with my students. 



大一的时候, Bryan Stevenson来到我的学校,带来了一场鼓舞人心的演讲,他分享了他最新的一部小说《正义的慈悲》。那时的我还没有读完整部小说,只是一些节选,但他的演讲足以令人振奋!史蒂文森的小说以他担任公益律师的经历为背景构建,向读者解释我们周围的世界并带我们融入这个世界。我通过自己的社会正义课程所学,逐渐理解这部小说。我把他的主题当作自己的课题,并且把小说构建的世界,看成是我在现实世界中,在任意情境中与他人接触的理想化形式。现在,在中国,我发现Bryan Stevenson作品的主题可以深深地运用到我对学生的教育教学法中。

Just Mercy’s four themes are getting proximate, understanding then arrative,maintaining.The first and most fundamental theme, for me,is getting proximate.



《正义的慈悲》小说的四大主题是:接近、理解、叙述和维护。最基本和重要的主题是无限接近。

In this,Iembody trying my best to always understand my students first.That requires my getting close,my leaning in, to meet their needs.This one is the most critical way I manage aclassroom–I must understand them in order for them to understand me.



就这点来说,我要做的就是尽力了解我的学生。这就要求我走近我的学生,再靠近一点,发现他们的需求。这是我管理课堂最关键的方式——我必须理解他们,以便他们能理解我。

Next, is understandingthe narrative.If I want to teach English, in an exciting new place,such asChina,I must work to understand the culture of education here in China. TheChinese classroom is admittedly even more different from the American classroomthan I thought. This is not a problem to be fixed, rather a difference to beunderstood.

 

The third theme is tomaintain hope.I see this in all things here.I am primarily teaching Grade 1students–they will not be fluent English speakers by the time I am done withthem, but I am hopeful that in my time with them they will retain some languageand get excited about continuing to learn English. Finally,doing the hard oruncomfortable things is my everyday here in China.

 

其次两点,是双方“理解”各自“叙述”。如果我想在一个令人兴奋的新地方,比如中国,教英语,我必须努力了解中国的教育文化。毫无疑问,中国教室与美国教室的差异比我想象的更大,这不是一个需要解决的问题,而是一个需要理解的差异。

 

最后一个主题是保持希望。我在龙游实验小学教一年级学生英文,他们并不能很流利地表达,但是我仍然希望在我为他们教学的这段时间里,他们能够学到一些知识,并且能够激发他们学英文的热情和主动性。

 

 




In a beautiful way,I am always stepping out of mycomfort zone and learning especially from my students perhaps just as much asthey are learning from me.I try to encourage my timid oral English studentssimilarly step out and practice their spoken English–it is hard but we are init together,I tell them.



最后,在中国的每一天,我都需要努力让自己适应这里,接受挑战。尽管如此,我并不忧伤。我看到的美好是走出自己的安逸区,接受每一项挑战。也许我从我学生身上学到的东西并不比他们从我身上学到的少。对于羞怯开口的学生,我鼓励他们勇敢走出自己的舒适区,大胆地说英文、锻炼自己的英文口语。我告诉他们,虽然有点困难,但是我会和他们在一起。

The four tenets of Bryan Stevenson’s personal memoir arewhat I work to embody as a teacher. JustMercy was a good book and an even better life tool that I believe any service-basedworker,such as a teacher, can learn and grow from.

 

这本书一定程度上也是Bryan Stevenson的个人回忆录,充满勇气和力量,对我影响深远。我把他的原则始终贯彻到我的教育教学生活中。这不单是一本好书,更是一个好的生活工具。我相信任何服务行业的工作者,如教师,都可以从中获得学习和成长。
